Movie Review- Wonder Woman (2017)

Wonder Woman is the latest film in the DC Extended Universe following Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad. It is written by Allan Heinberg and directed by Patty Jenkins. This movie finally got DC Comics film franchise back on track. Do not be concerned, I offer no spoilers.

Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) of the Amazons. At a young age, she is told how Zeus’ son Ares cursed mankind and led them in a revolt against the Pantheon, killing them all. Zeus stops him and shields Amazon Island from the outside word. With his dying breath, blessed the original clay form of Diana, giving her life. He gives Hippolyta  the “Godkiller” sword.

At first, Diana’s mother refuses to train her as a warrior, but General Antiope (Robin Wright) trains her in secret, but soon receives the Queen’s blessing. After becoming an adult, she sees a plane crash off the coast of her island carrying Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Following the plane is a small fleet of German troops. A battle brews between the Germans and the Amazons. Though the Germans are vanquished, several Amazons including Antiope are killed.

They interrogate Trevor who reveals the origins of World War I. Diana, convinced that Ares is behind this, leaves with Trevor, taking the Godkiller sword. After arriving in England, they meet Sir Patrick Morgan (David Thewlis) a British official who sends Trevor and a rogue group of specialists to stop Doctor Maru aka Dr. Poison (Elena Anaya) and General Erich Ludendorff (Danny Huston). Diana is thrust into a brutal and terrible war, one she cannot fully comprehend.

This is the best DCEU film yet. Hopefully this movie will get the franchise back on track after three mediocre films.

Gal Gadot shines as Wonder Woman. Just like saving the conclusion of Dawn of Justice, she makes this film an excellent piece of cinema. The way she portrays Diana Prince is unmatched. Chris Pine is a perfect match for the character of Steve Trevor. His onscreen chemistry with Gadot is perfect, though their relationship moves a bit fast.

Cinematic-wise, the film is very well made. Patty Jenkins is a fantastic storyteller on this movie. She put incredible backdrops to the characters. I applaud her choice to make Wonder Woman’s solo movie standalone. Though there is a brief connection to previous films, it served better as a unique part of the DCEU.

However, the main villain of the film was severely miscast and though he begins in epic fashion, he soon becomes a stock bad guy. They also take several historical liberties with World War I that will annoy any history buff.

That aside, it is an excellent film that is one of the best adaptions of a comic book hero.

If you would like to order your paperback copy of my debut novel Cacophony: A Tale Of Faith And Fear, click here. It is an incredible paranormal thriller about a group of demons trying to steal human souls by assaulting their church. The Messenger Gabriel, a Guardian angel Christopher, and the Seven Archangels are sent by God to stop them. It’s a tale that mixes drama, supernatural fiction, with a dash of fantasy.
