‘Star Wars: Underworld’- The Sci-Fi TV Series That Never Was

Jon Favreau is the showrunner of The Mandalorian, a new science fiction series based on the Star Wars franchise that is coming to Disney’s streaming service this year. However, before the keys of the franchise were given to current and failed LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy, there was another show being planned that had the working title of Star Wars: Underworld.

Shortly after 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas announced that he had plans for a television set between the Prequel and Original Trilogies. According to IGN, Lucus described the project as ” “one show that will split into four shows, focusing on different characters.” He also said fan favorite characters like Han Solo, Boba Fett, Emperor Palpatine, and several Jedi Knights would appear. Gizmodo reports he elaborated further in 2010, saying the show would be “more talky. It’s more of what I would call a soap opera with a bunch of personal dramas in it. It’s not really based on action-adventure films from the ’30s—it’s actually more based on film noir movies from the ’40s!”

In 2012, the TV show went from a tease to a possibility when it was tentatively titled “Star Wars: Underworld.” Frequent collaborator Rick McCallum was tapped as a producer. Digital Spy reported that he described the show, saying it would take place in the “period when the Empire is trying to take things over.”

As “Underworld” entered development, over 100 episodes were planned with over fifty episode scripts written and even entered the concept art phase at Skywalker Ranch. As they pitched it out, several networks passed on it, deeming it too expensive to make. Though Disney and ABC still considered making the series after their acquisition of LucasFilm, it seems like studio executives have suspended the series in favor of feature films and now, The Mandalorian.

Since Disney is determined to try to win back fans with Episode IX (though they will fail) nerds, geeks, and fans will never know where Star Wars: Underworld would take the franchise. With it being held in the hands of the creators of the galaxy far far away, I can picture it being grand. Now, we are stuck with writers more concerned with pushing agendas than building a universe. However, like Rogue One, the upcoming series The Mandalorian is in the hands of a real storyteller in Jon Favreau, who kicked off the MCU with Iron Man. I can see it being good. Hopefully, he will craft a story that will win back fans.
