Movie Review Flashback- Office Space 1999

20th Century Fox/Wikimedia

Mike Judge, creator of Beavis & Butt-Head and King of the Hill, directed Office Space in 1999. It is a comedy film that satirizes the life of the white collar worker.

Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) works in a repeating routine at his job at a tech company called Initech. He is hounded by his boss, vice president Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole), who is obsessed with busy work and TPS reports. After a conversation with his construction worker neighbor Lawrence (Diedrich Bader), he decides to try hypnotism to help. It works well. He starts dating a waitress named Joanna (Jennifer Aniston), he gets a promotion at work, but then he cooks up a scheme to embezzle money from the company with his two co-workers Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir (Ajay Naidu). That is when things go a little sideways. Meanwhile, co-worker Milton (Stephen Root) is wondering about his paycheck.

When this movie first went to theaters, it was not a great success, but after a successful VHS release and years of re-runs, Office Space has become a cult classic from the nineties.

I was only eleven when this film came out, so my parents wisely decided to skip for family nights, considering it is a comedy for adults. The humor is spot on and I can say that from personal experience. Sometime out of college, I worked a desk job and it was just as mundane as the movie makes it seem. That is the genius of the writing Mike Judge brought us here. Now, some of the circumstances are a little outlandish, but that only adds to the comedy of the film.

Bottom line, it is hilarious and genius comedy that not only captures the subtle humor of working in an office and exaggerating it, but also shines a spotlight on the nineties.
