Top 10 Comic Book Writers To Take Over ‘Batman’ After Tom King

The announcement of Tom King being replaced as the top writer for Batman at DC Comics has been met with some, “it’s about time.” Though he had a great start with such story-arcs like “The War of Jokes & Riddles,” he quickly falters following the much anticipated “Wedding” issue. Since then, not even rumors of studio interference could quell the criticism. It was announced that King would be removed after issue 85. DC Comics has made no announcements on who will take his place. I have a few suggestions in no particular order. Here is my list of Top 10 Comic Book Writers To Take Over ‘Batman’ After Tom King:

CS Johnson– Known for her genre-bending novel career, Johnson has also written graphic novels including the fantasy thriller The Serpent-Bearer and the Prince of Stars. She could re-establish the Batman Family and focus on the aspects of that make the Dark Knight great, though she would probably want to write Wonder Woman more so (considering the genre), she would hit a homerun with Batman.

Mike Baron– Also known as the ‘Bloody Red Baron,’ he created and wrote one of the most popular indie characters ‘Nexus‘ with artist Steve Rude as well as several horror stories. He would be perfect to bring the Dark Knight to life in a new era. Baron wrote a story in the 1988 Batman annual and would later introduce a new villain in two issues of Batman: The Legends of the Dark Knight.

James Tynion IV– His run on Detective Comics came to an end recently, which is a shame because he had several excellent story-arcs. While I was disappointed that his story-arc has ended, now he is free to take over the Batman.

Christopher J. Priest– He has an amazing resume as a comic book writer which includes Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Superman, and the Hulk. While he has taken over one of Dynamite Comics flagship characters Vampirella, he would make a great addition to the Dark Knight.

Jason Aaron– While he’s been somewhat hit or miss lately, his Ultimate Captain America is a cut above and one of exactly two good things about Ultimate Marvel. While he is currently with Marvel Comics, he might defect to DC Comics in a pinch.

Neil Adams– He helped redefine the darkness of Batman in the 80s, following the tragedy that was the 60s and 70s campiness. His run as a writer for the Dark Knight is well remembered by fans and he could help return the character to basics.

Paul Dini– Besides his own characters like Madam Mirage, he also helped create Harley Quinn, the Joker’s girlfriend and one of the best Batman sometimes foe and sometimes ally. He has written several stories for DC Comics and would definitely bring that missing edge back.

Devin K. Grayson– She already has experience writing several well-received Batman specials and the novelization of the video game Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu. She is familiar with the landscape of Gotham City and could bring an edge to the stories.

Orson Scott Card– The award-winning science fiction author proves that he can write a comic book as well when he wrote Ultimate Iron Man, the second of the two good things about Ultimate Marvel. His imagination could take the Dark Knight to new levels.

Scott Snyder– His tales are well-remembered in the New 52 as well as his Dark Nights Metal event. His stories then and now continue to wow readers with his imagination. Hopefully, they will give him a new shot in this Rebirth universe.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. Tell me if there is a comic book, movie, or novel you would like me to review. While you are at it, here my thoughts on the first issue of Batman Universe and CS Johnson’s short novella Kitsuneko. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more posts like this one.
