Anime Movie Review- Castle In The Sky

Studio Ghibli brings us another magical adventure with the 1986 anime movie Castle In The Sky, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Officially, it is the very first feature film created by the Japanese animation studio. This review will cover the 2003 Disney english dub.

Sheeta (Anna Paquin) is a young girl who has been kidnapped by the government agent known as Muska (Mark Hamill) who want her amulet. As they are bringing her to the capital, the airship is attacked by Dola (Cloris Leachman) and her band of airpirate sons.

During the incident, Sheeta falls seemingly to her death, but the amulet seemingly activates, slowing her fall. She is caught by the orphan boy Pazu (James Van Der Beek) who works in a nearby mine.

Pazu takes her to his home and nurses her back to health.

Pazu is building a flying machine to achieve his father’s dream of rediscovering the floating island of Laputa. They are soon found by Muska and Dola, who pursue the children until they escape into a mine.

Soon it is revealed that the amulet is more than a diamond from magical rocks, but a key, a key to discovering and activating Laputa.

This film follows Studio Ghibli’s pattern perfectly. It features younger characters being chased by adults, they go on a magical adventure, all while facing danger.

Castle In The Sky adds a steampunk element to this adventure and it really does a good job representing the genre.

I would like to compliment Disney’s dubbing efforts. Their choice of voice actors perfectly compliments the movie and adds a flare to it for American audiences.

FAVORITE QUOTE: This is no longer a throne room. This is a tomb for the both of us. You see, a king without compassion does not deserve a kingdom.

PARENTAL CONCERNS: Action violence
