Anime Movie Review- The Secret World of Arrietty

Based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton, this is Hiromasa Yonebayashi as his feature film debut as a director. The Secret World Of Arrietty was produced by the Japanese anime company Studio Ghibli in 2010 and dubbed into English by The Walt Disney Company in 2011.

Narrated by a sickly young boy named Shō (David Henrie), he tells of his friendship with a family of insect-sized people who live under his great Aunt Sadako’s (Moisés Arias) home. The maid Haru (Carol Burnett) is suspicious of these tiny people known as borrowers.

Young borrower Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler) lives with her tiny family including her father Pod (Will Arnett) and her mother Homily (Amy Poehler). They try to stay away from the “giant” humans as much as possible, but Shō catches a glimpse of Arrietty as she and her father try to bring sugar homes back to their tiny apartment.

However, Shō shows an interesting in protecting Arrietty’s family from his aunt’s cat, who is continually trying to eat them.

Though Arrietty grows interested in seeing the outside world, her parents are worried that the humans may try to capture them and hurt them.

This is the fourth adaption of The Borrowers novel, but the first made in Japan. Since I have not read the novel as of yet. I cannot tell you if it is a good adaptions.

That being said, I did enjoy the whimsical adventure that was presented in the movie. The animators truly brought an amazing story to life and it is worth applauding.

This is actually the very first Studio Ghibli film that I saw in theaters. That gives it a somewhat nostalgic place in my heart.
