Movie Review- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

01 The Hobbit

What can I say about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? Well, I will tell you that Peter Jackson, Weta Workshop, and New Line Cinema has brought us another masterpiece.

This film has been a long time coming. It was stuck in development limbo since before The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. In fact, it went through several rewrites, two directors, several screenplays before they finally pieced together a trilogy of epic proportions.

The plot has been expanded using The Appendices from The Return of The King to allow for a much greater character development and story structure. It tells the story when an unlikely Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is reluctantly recruited into a band of Dwarfs by Wizard Gandalf the Gray (Sir Ian McKellan). They are journeying to the Lonely Mountains to reclaim a Dwarfish treasure stolen by Smaug the Dragon. What follows is an adventure that has Orcs, Goblins, Elves, Eagles, and a curious round of riddles with Gollum (Andy Serkis). It is a story of adventure, courage, and learning about who you are.

The movie cannot be compared to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, except that The Hobbit is a prequel. While the first three films were action and war oriented, this film is more of an adventure epic, filled with dreams of treasure and revenge.

The film is remarkably put together, with amazing acting, scripting, cinematography, special effects, and so much more. The opening takes immediately prior to Bilbo Baggin’s birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring. To me, this scene did seem to linger on as I awaited for the new adventure to begin. This to me, seemed to be the film’s only noticeable flaw. It is an amazing journey! I hope you enjoy it!
