What does the Bible say about relationships? If you look at them in the Bible and in real life, they are extremely complicated. It does not matter whether you are a Christian or not. However, as I was studying I found three themes that they have in common.
- Good Company- I Corinthians 15:33– Bad company corrupts good morals.
When you are choosing friends or someone to be in a dating relationship, be sure to know if they are in a good place with God. Sometimes, we run into people who they seem fun and they challenge us to try new things. Maybe they even like some of the things we do. However, if they are not right with God, he or she can pull us down with them. We think we are immune, but soon we find that they have pulled us down.
2. Good Encouragement- Romans 1:12- that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
As friends, we need to be uplifting to each other. We need to encourage each other in our dreams and ambitions. Find friends who do that for you. They encourage the stands you take for Jesus. They encourage you in your dreams. They stand with you and beside you. If you don’t do that as friend, you need to start practicing it.
3. Good Boundaries- Luke 6:31- Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.
You need to have limits on topics of discussion. If you or your friends are uncomfortable sharing certain thoughts or feelings, do not pressure them. Do not let them pressure you. Real friends know that sometimes it is good just to be there. If you are dating someone, you need to not share negative experience about your parents. That’s what teachers, counselors, and your youth pastors are for. If other things are off limit, you need to make that very clear. It develops trust when you set up good boundaries.
