Gavin Hood was tapped to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a prequel to the original X-Men trilogy. It was originally meant to launch a series of standalone films based on the Marvel Comics franchise, but after lackluster performance at the box office and critical ambivalence, that idea never materialized.
The movie tells the story of Logan (Hugh Jackman) and how he became the Wolverine. He was born in the colonial days of the United States with his half-brother Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber). They go through their long lives joining the military and participating in several battles throughout history. During the Vietnam War, they are recruited by General Stryker (Danny Huston) to join Weapon X, a secret group of mutants that are doing black-ops missions. After a disastrous mission, he leads the team.
After his wife Silverfox (Lynn Collins) is killed by Creed, he returns and is given his metallic skeleton, escaping and is now on the run from other members of the team.
The movie’s overall plot is interesting, but the pacing is a little troubled. It goes at full speed action and then slows down to be contemplative. Then it picks up again and then slows down again. However, this is not the primary issue with the movie.
The main trouble is with the casting. With the exception of Hugh Jackson as the title character and will.i.am as John Wraith, all of the cast is seriously miscast, especially Schreiber as Creed and Taylor Kitsch as Gambit. This leads to a somewhat clunkiness when it comes to the cast’s cohesion.
However, it was still an improvement on the third X-Men film from the original trilogy and it suffices as a comic book action film.
