How does a thief, a genetically altered raccoon, a living tree, a violent sociopath, and an assassin become the bravest heroes in outer space? Well, this movie answers that question as the rogue warrior Ronan the Accuser steals an Infinity Stone (called Infinity Gem in Marvel Comics) and plans to wipe out a race of aliens. Only these five misfits can stand together to defeat Ronan before he can use it to destroy an entire race and perhaps even the galaxy. That is the story James Gunn tells in Guardians of the Galaxy.
The galactic rogue and former Ravager pirate Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is after the Power Stone, a powerful artifact. The problem is an assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a genetically engineered raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper), his tree sidekick Groot (Vin Diesel), along with a heartbroken warrior named Drax (Dave Bautista) are seeking it as well. At first, they want it for their own selfish desires, but they soon realize they have to keep it out of the hands of Ronin the Accuser (Lee Pace), who wants to wipe out the Nova Corp and also overthrow Thanos (Josh Brolin), who sends assassin Nebula (Karen Gillan) to find it.
I’ll be in honest, I was never a huge fan of the comic book series Guardians of the Galaxy. I did enjoy their guest appearances in the animated Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes and such, but to me, they were too similar to the Starjammer (or vice versa), but the film took it to a whole new level. While I did not care for how the film toned down the power of the Nova Corp, I found the movie action packed, well directed by James Gunn, the ensemble cast was great, and the storyline littered with hilarious one-liners.
Bottom line, some have said this is the best Marvel movie yet, but I disagree, The Avengers still holds that title, but it was a good break from the usual genre the others have been taking.
