Top Films Rescued From Development Limbo

top films rescued from development limbo

We have had fun with my series on top films stuck in Development Limbo. You know, that’s the place where films have been given a green light, but then stall in a never ending cycle of rewrites or get put on the back-burner. Now, check out my list of Top Films Rescued From Development Limbo.

Monsters University- The sequel to Monsters, Inc. labored in limbo for years due to Pixar’s hesitance to create sequels. However in 2013, Pixar and Disney made a compromise so that it would be conceived as prequel.

Alien VS Predator- The crossover between the two biggest monster alien franchises was first conceived in the 1990s. No one could get the option picked up, but it finally came out in 2004.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe- Chris Carter had tried to develop a film based on the related hit TV show for 2012, but it go delayed and delayed. It was finally released last month.

Speed Racer- Based on the hit anime, it labored in development limbo from 1990 t0 2008. It went through four directors and many rewrites before finally being released.

Spider-Man- It’s true. Marvel had been wanting to do an adaption of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man since 1980. However, a cheesy tv series was released in its place and a film would not come out until 2002.

Lincoln- Steven Spielberg had been wanting to make film about Abraham Lincoln since 1999, but it would not be until he bought the rights to Team of Rivals before it finally got a green light. The book came in 2005, the movie in 2012.

Atlas Shrugged- Ayn Rand was approached for a film, miniseries, and a series of films in the 1970s, but she refused all scripts. It finally became a trilogy of films with the third one coming out next month.

Red Dawn remake- The remake of the John Milius’ 1980s action film was planned for 2009, but politics forced it to be pushed back to 2012.

Ender’s Game- An adaption of the book by Orson Scott Card was planned in 1985, almost as soon as it came out. It kept getting shelved until it was finally released in November 2013.

The Lord of the Rings- John Boorman has wanted to direct an adaption of JRR Tolkien’s trilogy into one film. One problem, Tolkien opposed all story changes and the fact that the Beatles were going to have roles in the film. It would take until the 21st Century before it became adapted.
