‘Justice League: Throne of Atlantis’ Review- Going Under The Sea

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis‘ is the fourth entry into the DC Animated Movie Universe from Warner Bros. Animation. It is directed by Ethan Spaulding and very loosely based on the “Throne of Atlantis” from Geoff Johns’ New 52 story-arc.

Colonel Steve Trevor (George Newbern) visits Justice League headquarters and speaks with Cyborg (Shemar Moore) about investigating the destruction of a nuclear submarine. Though he denies the JL exists, he visits the sub and gathers evidence, discovering the nuclear weapons missing. Cyborg gathers Batman (Jason O’Mara), Flash (Christopher Gorham), Shazam (Sean Astin), Superman (Jerry O’Connell), Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson) and, Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion). After examining evidence, Wonder Woman deduces the attackers were Atlanteans. Superman and Batman go to find an expert on Atlantis named Stephen Shin (Matthew Yang King).

Meanwhile, Atlantean Queen Atlanna (Sirena Irwin) secretly dispatches her trusted advisor Mera (Sumalee Montano) to find her son, the half-human Arthur Curry (Matt Lanter). She hopes to prevent her son Orn (Sam Witwer) from taking the throne and declaring war on the “surface world” with the help of the mercenary Black Manta (Harry Lennix). However, Arthur is not keen on taking the throne of a kingdom he does not know, but circumstances call him and the Justice League together to stop the Ocean Master from unleashing the horrifying creatures of the Trench on the surface.

The movie combines elements from the “Throne of Atlantis” and “The Trench” creating a story that involved a new origin for Aquaman that removes somewhat of the cheesy nature of the character. I did appreciate that since Justice League Unlimited was able to do it with ease, it makes sense that DC Entertainment could do it as well. I also liked Matt Lanter as Arthur Curry. He performed the role very well and I really feel like he owned it.

I was also happy to see the principle actors from Justice League: War return, especially O’Mara and Dawson as Batman and Wonder, respectively. The two of them are excellent. O’Connell did replace Alan Tudyk as Clark Kent, but I honestly did not notice too much. I did like one change, selecting Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. He had voiced the character in a previous animated film and I think he does it with style and perfection. The only role I felt was miscast was Steve Blum as Lex Luthor is a small role. He is a good voice actor, but I do not think he was right for the part.

Despite taking narratives from more than one source, the plot moves along very smoothly and does not get lost in the ensemble cast of Justice Leaguers who are shown on-screen. The thrills and action keep your attention, providing a ton of entertainment. The animation is also spot-on with the character designs, environment, and action with everything moving with ease.

Bottom line, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis is an excellent adaption of the New 52 origin for Aquaman. The performances are exemplary and the action is incredibly excellent.
