Following the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes Avengers Age of Ultron, once again directed by Joss Whedon.
With the fall of the SHIELD (or so we’re told), the Avengers have stepped up their game in taking out HYDRA. They assault a base where they encounter the Maximoff twins, the speedster Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his twisted sister Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Captain America (Steve Rogers), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson),and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are all affected.
Though they are victorious, Scarlet Witch implants thoughts into Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.). He sees a vision where the Avengers are dead and the earth is destroyed. Only Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) seems unaffected by this.
With this in mind, he and Bruce Banner aka The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), use Loki’s staff from the first film to create an artificial intelligence. At first they think they failed, but what they awaken is none other than an evil consciousness known as Ultron (James Spader).
Ultron then allies with the Maximoff twins and goes on a killing spree that culminates in an attempt to reset the Earth. Up against this enemy, even the mighty Avengers seem unable to stop him.
A few fans were saying this film failed to live up to the hype. I politely disagree. The story, acting, and everything in between was superb. Now, I’m not saying it was as good as the first film. That would be insane.
It seems most of the ire is aimed at the portrayal of Black Widow. I’ve read reviews by morons that say she became a “damsel in distress.” People who say that clearly did not watch the movie. She is one of the strongest characters on screen.
Now, the first trailer was a little deceiving. Ultron was portrayed as a sinister villain, but in the film, he’s actually an anti-Iron Man. I will admit that was a bit of a disappointment. While Spader portrayed a different character, his acting was spot on for the role.
The introduction to Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Quicksilver to the Avengers is a bold move.
While not as epic as the first film, this one is a definite and true entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
