Movie Review Flashback- Changeling (2008)

Clint Eastwood directed Changeling, it is a masterpiece released in 2008. It stars Angelina Jolie, Jeffrey Donovan, Jason Butler Harner, John Malkovich, Michael Kelly, and others in smaller roles. It tells the true story of Christine Collins whose boy went missing and whose disappearance may be connected to the Wineville Chicken Coop murders.

Taking place in 1928, Christine Collins is a loving mother who takes care of her son Walter. He vanishes one night and though she reports it. the Los Angeles police department ignores her. After taking his disappearance seriously, they return a boy to Mrs. Collins. It is boy, but not her Walter. When she tries to confront the police about the false identity, they at first ignore. Later, they imprison her on false pretenses in an insane asylum.

Little do they know that in Wineville, not far from Los Angeles, there is a killer that is stalking children. Walter may be among them.

Clint Eastwood is a master storyteller. While Angelina Jolie’s talent is somewhat lacking, the sheer suspense of the film carries it throughout. It is riveting from beginning to end. It exposes how corrupt the system was back in the day. The production value is incredible and the way it moves really reaches into your soul. The feel of the movie is dark, but it is powerfully moving.

More importantly, the story. It was about a mother who never gave up hope.
