Movie Review Flashback- Spotlight (2015)

Spotlight is a 2015 won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. I am often hard on the Academy, but I honestly think this film deserved the award. It is directed by Tom McCarthy and stars an ensemble cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian d’Arcy James, Maureen Keiller, Liev Schreiber, Billy Crudup, Richard Jenkins, and more. It tells the story of the Boston Globe Spotlight team that uncovered the sex abuse scandal that the local Catholic Church was covering up.

The movie tells in 2001 when new editor Marty Baron assigns the Spotlight team into uncovering a possible cover-up within the Catholic Church. The team features veteran reports  Michael Rezendes, Walter “Robby” Robinson, Sacha Pfeiffer, Ben Bradlee, Jr., and Matt Carroll find that it was not one priest, but possibly a conspiracy that spans decades and a whole nation.

The movie is a riveting account. While the story does play a bit fast and loose with some of the details, it does its best to shine a light on the the media team that brought the story forward. The directing and acting is incredible. It is interesting and though it deals with some serious issues, it portrays it from the angle of the victims. I did find that somewhat glamorizes the media. In an era of fake news, though this is a good movie, it definitely tries to make the media into a noble enterprise. That is a growing rarity.

I want to single out Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdam’s performance. The two of them shine as their characters and their performances were some of the most riveting in the movie.
