Movie Review- Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman V Superman

Director Zack Snyder returns for Man of Steel sequel Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Normally, I give a summary of the film before giving you the bottom line, but the plot is so intricate, I feel I cannot do that without giving something away. I think it will be more prudent if I break it down by cons and pros and then give you my thoughts.

CONS:

Fans were worried about Ben Affleck portraying Batman and while some of the hysteria, including my own, was unfounded, he was not perfect. Going by theatrical films, as Bruce Wayne, Affleck lacked the charm of Adam West and Michael Keaton, but as Batman he lacked the wit of Val Kilmer, the personality of Kevin Conroy, and the skills of Christian Bale. He was completely wooden most of the time and showed very little emotion. He was very brutal as well. While not directly involved in the death of people, Batman had no problem being indirectly involved in the bad guy’s death. It was very disheartening. I hope they recast for Justice League

Superman, geeze, cut the angst. Yes, he’s a super powered alien who feels displaced on Earth. Okay, we get it. Choose what you want to do already and stop whining.

As for the main villain, I feel Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor came off more like Jim Carrey’s The Riddler than anything else.

As for the rest, Zack Snyder loves to muddy his films with philosophical nonsense. We cannot just make a great action film. Every scene had to be analyzed to some religious or atheistic principle. That made certain parts of the film really boring. Also, there was no Batman villain or even supporting character besides Alfred to balance out with Superman. Maybe that is why Suicide Squad is overloaded with Batman villains.

PROS

Jeremy Irons was a great Alfred. While not as good as Michael Caine, his performance was adequate. The decision to put Gotham City across the bay to Metropolis was perfect. The scenes where you could look across and see one from the other was spot on.

Wonder Woman was epic. Marvel now actually has some catching up to do in the sense of introducing an epic female superhero. Gal Gadot nailed the part spot on. She was brilliant as the Amazon princess and definitely stole the final act of the film.

I was pleased that, unlike Watchmen and Man of Steel, the film did not end anti-climatically. It ended on a satisfying note. Zack Snyder has a bad habit of just kind of ending his films, but this one ended well.

Now, what you really want to know. Yes, the fight scene between The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel was epic. It was worth the movie just to see that. It was a great battle between two titans of the DC Universe done with style.

BOTTOM LINE: The Pros of this movie outweigh the Cons. I enjoyed it a great deal and was able to look past some of the mistakes that they made as far as interpreting Batman and other aspects of the DC Universe. However, if you are expecting it to meet the high bar set by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, you will be disappointed. I hope you enjoyed this review.
