I was looking for a new book at my local bookstore, as rare as those are becoming, and I came across the section that had Bible. Wow, there are so many choices.
You want a King James Version Bible? How about New King James Version? NIV? ESV? HCSB? Philips? Man, it is not just the different versions. There are Bibles for Men, Women, US Soldiers, Firemen, Policemen, Kids, etc. Don’t even get me started on the colors. I mean, I saw black, blue, pink, brown, green, lime, metallic, mixed, oh wow, so many choices. It can seem a little confusing.
Personally, I think it is a good thing. I know there is a “great debate” about the various versions and paraphrases of the Bible and you should research them to be sure they are a good edition, but I think it is narrow minded to think there is one in English or Latin that are God anointed.
Personally, I like the classic New International Version, The Passion Translation, Holman’s Christian Standard Bible, Philip’s New Testament in Modern English, KJV, NKJV, and of course, the Geneva Bible (the first American Bible).
As a Christian, I believe that we should different Bibles so we can see the Holy Scriptures in a new light. Maybe one translator or paraphraser noticed something from another one. I think that is great, not to twist scripture, but to show us how much inspiration it took from Holy Spirit to write the Bible. It gives us a better appreciation of the Bible.
Imagine, God loves us so much, He gave us the Bible. Many religions twist in the wind because their scriptures are so vague or nonexistent. Our God, however, wrote us a love letter to give us a glimpse at how much He cares for us.
So, the next time you are looking for a new book to read, I encourage you to get back to the Bible. Find a new version or paraphrase that will challenge. Use wisdom and do your research, but definitely get a new perspective on how much God loves us.
