Top 10 Alternate Superman Versions

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster had no idea what they were doing when they created Kal-El aka Clark Kent aka Superman. They created an icon that has lived, died, resurrected, and battled evil villains all in the name of truth and justice. While Superman is not my favorite comic book character (it’s Batman, duh) he still is a huge part of DC Comics lore. In the main canon, the Last Son of Krypton has gone through some serious changes. However, outside continuity, there are some pretty epic stories. In no particular order, here is my list of Top 10 Alternate Superman Versions:

Red Son– In an alternate universe, Kal-El crashes in the Soviet Union and is raised by the Communist party. He ends becoming a brutal dictator and only US President Lex Luthor can stop him before its too late.

The Man of Steel– This was original the Modern origin of Superman until Superman: Birthright, but it currently stands as out-of-continuity though many writers continue to draw inspiration from the 1986 story.

Earth One– A young, more modern Man of Steel arrives in Metropolis. This one battles a brand new villain from the outer reaches of space.

Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?– As the Silver Age end, this story told the tale from Lois Lane’s perspective as Superman battles an evil version of the cosmic imp Mxyzptlk.

Superman: American Alien– Told in six parts, this story tells of a young Clark Kent trying to find his place in the world.

Kingdom Come– An aged Superman returns from isolation to battle the new hero Magog as he leads a deadly new group of heroes. However, the Man of Steel’s new outlook on justice runs afoul of Batman.

Speeding Bullets– What if Kal-El was adopted by the Waynes of Gotham City? Would he become a Man of Tomorrow or a Dark Knight?

All-Star Superman– After flying too close to the sun, Superman becomes overpowered, but is slowly dying. He goes on several adventures in his final days including fighting a Krypton powered Lex Luthor.

Lex Luthor: Man of Steel– Told from the perspective of the villain, this one portrays a Superman who is not as sunny or bright. Thus, Luthor designs the hero Hope to stop him. Things don’t go as planned.

Adventures of the Man of Steel– This version, of course, is the one from the DC Animated Universe created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. This one is the best, hands down.

That is my list. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below which version of the Man of Steel is your favorite. While you are at it, check out my list of character that could defeat Superman. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more posts like this one.
