Movie Review- The Magnificent Seven (2016)

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the 1960 Western epic film of the same name. It is directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars an ensemble cast including:  Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Peter Sarsgaard, Luke Grimes, and others.

The film is similar in premise to the original, except the small town, Rose Creek, is being taken over by greedy robber baron Bartholomew Bogue and is located in the United States in an isolated part of the country.

After Bogue kills many of the towns people, one desperate widow, Emma Cullen, rides to find some men to help them retake the town. She recruits warrant officer Sam Chilsom who becomes interested when hearing the name Bogue. He soon recruits gambler Josh Faraday, ex-Confederate sharpshooter Goodknight Robicheaux, knife wielding expert Billy Rocks, Mexican outlaw Vasquez, skilled tracker Jack Horne, and Comanche warrior Red Harvest.

They arrive in the town and prepare to take it back from Bogue, who is away on business. They have one week to prepare and some in the town don’t want to fight. Emma rallies them and they prepare for the upcoming battle.

While it lacks the all-star talent and the epic sense of the original, this is by far an amazing film. It definitely catches the feel of a classic Western film. What honestly makes the film is Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Haley Bennett. Their acting skills and dialogue really bring the film together.

Spoilers (Skip Ahead)

I think killing off Chris Pratt’s character was a mistake. I think it was an unnecessary character death. If they had let him live, they could have done a sequel, but it will be difficult now. Not impossible, but difficult.
