Movie Review- Doctor Strange

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with the standalone film Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson and produced by Kevin Feige. While most of the films have taken an action and science fiction feel, this movie curves into the world of fantasy.

Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)  is a famous surgeon who is arrogant and prideful. While he is very popular, his attitude drives most people away, including former girlfriend Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). After a car accident where his hands are broken, he distances himself from everyone and bankrupts himself trying to repair the damage.

After finding a clue, he embarks on a journey to Nepal where he meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). She shows him the powers that are hidden deep within the Multiverse. With Wong (Benedict Wong) and Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) at his side, he soon begins to learn magical secrets. However, the evil Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) wants to unlock the dark dimension unleashing the malevolent being who rules in on the Earth.

This film is a throwback to Phase One of the MCU in that it is more of a standalone film and only connects to the franchise subtly. That was a refreshing change of pace.

Cumberbatch is incredible as Stephen Strange. He really brought the Marvel wizard to life in a way no one else could. Likewise, McAdams does a perfect job as Palmer. She stepped into the part with perfection. Mikkelsen does a great job as Kaecilius. Unlike a lot of villains in the MCU, he has conviction and believes in his purpose. It is very different than the usual villains you might see.

While the rest of the actors were good, I do have a problem with some of the ascetics. While Swinton is a fine actress, she does not match the character in the comic books. They took a Chinese wise man and replaced him with a Celtic mystic. That did not make much sense to me. It seems Hollywood even steps on themselves when doing the diversity hires.

Derrickson was the perfect choice to direct this movie. He brought it to life with the plot, the visuals, and the overall development of the characters. It was visually stunning and an impressive film. It is an excellent addition to the MCU and I hope that Cumberbatch returns to play Dr. Strange is more films.
