Searching For A Good Church Home Part 1

Going to church is an important part of a believer’s life. Whether it be a house, mass, mega, or local church God calls all people to find a place to fellowship. You can help sinners became saints and disciple them. You can get and give encouragement. Jesus modeled this behavior for in the Gospels as did the early Christians in the Book of Acts.

As a pastor kid, I have mostly attended the church’s my family has ministered at. Since my super cute wife and I moved out to Los Angeles, we find ourselves looking for one that fits us. It can be an overwhelming process and not one that should be taken lightly.

Our first week there, we chickened out looking and live streamed a very wonderful service, but it was not the same as being there. This week, we went on our first trip “church hunting” and decided to go to a larger church that was in a nice neighborhood where we lived. We both prayed that we would be in agreement with one another about whether or not we thought God wanted us to attend.

We both sat down in the back. The campus was beautiful and the sanctuary easy to find. We sat down and as worship began, I found the musicians were very talented. That was it. It was like going to any concert. I felt absolutely no prompting of Holy Spirit while it was going on. Even the prayer the worship leader prayed at the end of their song list seemed insincere.

We sat down, took Communion. and the pastor got up to speak. He had a pleasant, deep voice that resounded. I noticed one thing, he only briefly talked about God, Jesus, or the Bible in his opening before he began talking about himself. It was not a humorous story that pastors use to get a point across or a testimony, the man was grandstanding.

My super cute wife leaned over and said, “I’m not sure this is the one.” I agreed. We decided to leave. Since we were in the back, we walked out quietly and did not start a fuss.

I am sure that the church is sincere in their efforts, but both my super cute wife and I were in agreement. It was not the right place for us. When you find a place of worship, you need one where you can and learn. It is a place for discipleship, making friends, and just doing life together. It is not something to just say, “hey, let’s go here!”

It is important to find a place where you can worship in unity with your brothers and sisters in Christ. We will continue our search and I will let you know when we find a good one.
