Movie Review- Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant is a science fiction sequel to Prometheus and prequel to the Alien franchise created by Ridley Scott who also directs this 2017 film. It has an ensemble cast including Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, James Franco, Nathaniel Dean, Guy Pearce, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender in a dual role.

The movie opens with the creation of David 8 with Mr. Weyland who assures the android that he will find his creators.

The film then jumps to 2104 with a space ship full of colonists and astronauts bound for a new planet. After a catastrophic failure and the loss of several cryogenically frozen crew members, the new captain tasks Danny, the widow of his predecessor with helping to repair the ship with Walter, the crew’s android. Danny expresses her desire to build a cabin on their new home world.

As they mourn their losses, they detect a distress call from another planet and after much debate, they decide to send a landing crew which includes Walter and Danny. On the planet, several of the crew are infected with the xenomorphs, terrifying aliens that are deadly. They are saved by David 8, who is Walter’s twin.

As the crew decides their next move, they soon discover David 8 could be behind releasing a terrible virus that is threatening to spread with deadly consequences unless it is stopped.

This film is far superior to Prometheus is every way. The plot makes sense, you root for the characters, and it returns the franchise to its core as a science fiction horror.

Fassbender is excellent as both Walter and David 8. Walter has a strange accent that Fassbender sometimes to give to David 8 by mistake, other than that, he is pulls off the dual role. Also, Waterston is brilliant as Danny. A lot of people compared her to Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen
Ripley from the first four films. I believe that Waterson is independent of Ripley. They are completely different characters, but both strong will an iron will.

One of my complaints about the film is it shoves philosophy down your throat. The movie wastes precious time with the characters debating their perspectives on life. Instead of the superior subtly of philosophy like the previous franchise entrees, Alien: Covenant constantly throws it in your face. It was at these moments where I found myself rolling my eyes.

The Messenger Gabriel, a Guardian angel Christopher, and the Seven Archangels are sent by God to stop them. It’s a tale that mixes drama, supernatural fiction, with a dash of fantasy.
