Movie Review- Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

Jumanji: The Welcome To The Jungle is a 2017 adventure comedy directed by Jake Kasdan. It is a sequel to the 1995 comedy Jumanji starring the late, great Robin Williams. In the first film, the game came to the players. In this new film, the game takes you.

In 1996, Alex Vreeke (Mason Guccione) finds a mysterious board game ‘Jumanji.’ Though he plans to discard it, he wakes up the next morning to find the board game has transformed into a video game. Alex disappears and his family falls apart soon after.

In 2016, four teenagers nerd Spencer Gilpin (Alex Wolff), athlete Anthony “Fridge” Johnson (Anthony “Fridge” Johnson), narcissistic pretty girl Bethany Walker (Madison Iseman), and overachiever Martha Kaply (Morgan Turner), all get sentenced to detention for various reasons. They plug it in and soon they get sucked into the world of Jumanji, becoming the avatars they chose.

Gilpin becomes the handsome and strong Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson). Fridge becomes the tiny, but resourceful Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart). Martha becomes Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), a dance fighter and commando. Bethany becomes Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, an overweight, middle-aged man who is cartographer.

They have to fight their way pass Professor Russel Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale) in order to restore a jewel to a giant jaguar statue to beat the game. With only three lives to go, they hope to get there with the help of pilot Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough (Nick Jonas) or they could die.

This is a hilarious comedy. I had such a fun time watching it. It is adventurous and an adept new take on the original film. Jake Kasdan does a good job playing homage to the original movie.

I would like to praise Johnson, Hart, Black, and Gillan. They do a good job of bringing their teen personas to the avatars of the video game. Johnson and Hart in particular have good on-screen chemistry similar to Central Intelligence.

Bottom line, it is a sometimes awkward, but always funny comedic adventure through the jungle that has an all-star cast with terrific timing and funny dialogue.
