Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment makes it’s second attempt to adapt one of the most famous comic book story-arcs of all time in the new feature film The Death Of Superman. It is the 11th installment in the so-called DC Animated Movie Universe. Directed by Sam Liu and James Tucker, it is superior to the previous version and even the past few live-action movies.
Superman (Jerry O’Connell) and Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson) have mutually ended their relationship. As Clark Kent, the Man of Steel is pursuing a relationship with his Lois Lane (Rebecca Romijn). He seeks the advice of fellow Justice League members including Batman (Jason O’Mara), Flash (Christopher Gorham), and Aquaman (Matt Lanter).
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Rainn Wilson) is under house arrest, but is sneaking out to investigate a meteor that destroyed a NASA rocket and seemingly killed its crew. However, after they find it, a creature emerges and begins a rampage heading right to Metropolis. The Justice League try to hold it off, but they are no match for the being Lane refers to as Doomsday.
With the League down, Superman fights it, but it soon overwhelms him. Luthor tries to jump in, only to be saved by the Man of Steel. As the city watches, it seems that not even the Man of Tomorrow can stop Doomsday before it is too late.
This movie is far better than Superman Doomsday, the 2007 adaption. I just wanted to get that out of the way.
This adaption puts a “New 52” spin on it, in regards to the costumes the Justice League members are wearing and some of the personalities of the characters. However, it stays true to the original text of the comic book arcs while modernizing. It was a difficult feat and I applaud Sam Liu for the excellent narrative he crafted.
Aside from that, the animation and the voice cast was spot on, especially Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (hint, hint WB). I was surprised by Rainn Wilson as Luthor. While he is not as good as Clancy Brown or James Wood, I do think he was a bold casting choice that proves sometimes a risk pays off. Since I am a walking Batman Encyclopedia, I tend to favor more Gotham-themed media, but I have to tip my hat on this one.
Since this film was filled with Easter Eggs and ends on a cliffhanger, I feel if I delve anymore into it, it would give too many spoilers. Goes without saying, I’m excited for the sequel Reign of the Supermen.
