Documentary Review- Death Of A Nation

Following on the success of a series of documentaries including 2016: Obama’s America and Hillary’s America, Conservative commentator-turned-filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza holds nothing back in his latest feature ‘Death Of A Nation.’ The documentary explores hidden connections between the American Left and some of the worst European dictators.

The theme of the documentary is to challenge the Left on their attacks aimed at Republicans. He highlights the accusation and then uses facts, historically and scholarly, to debunk it.

For example, D’Souza discusses the history of fascism, including its historical connections to socialism, pointing out that Depression Era President Franklin D. Roosevelt admired Italian dictator and fascist leader Benito Mussolini. He explains how they would communicate and at one point, Mussolini reviews the Democrat’s book ‘Looking Forward’ saying that Roosevelt was one of them, a fascist. FDR never challenged the notion.

One of the controversial things about the film, on the Left and Right, was a movie poster featuring President Abraham Lincoln and President Donald Trump mashed together. However, the documentary makes no case for Trump being Lincoln. The Civil War is a small part of the film, with the majority focused on the Second World War. D’Souza merely points out that the Democrat Party is using the same accusations of tyranny against the first Republican president is identical to the attacks used against the current administration.

At times, D’Souza’s accusations against the Left seem sensational and even far fetched, but he does not ask you to take his word for it. He presents documents, private letters, and interviews historical scholars, both Liberal and Conservative, to prove his case.

In particular, D’Souza challenges white supremacist and alt-right thought leader Richard Spencer on his political beliefs where he exposes the fraud as not a Conservative, but a man of who holds several far Left-leaning ideals.

The Hollywood critics are already routing to mock ‘Death Of A Nation.’ On the movie review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a jarring ‘rotten’ rating of 0% based on eleven reviews. However, the audience score has a positive rating, as of the writing of this review. Clearly, it is resonating with its viewers.

The documentary is far from perfect. He seems to jump from subject to subject at neck-break speed before tying it back to his central theme. That being said in tone, message, and historical facts, D’Souza delivers on every level. He is not subtle with his patriotism and it is on full display. The Left and their allies in the media are calling it Pro-Trump, but in fact, it is a Pro-America film.
