Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is an anime film produced by Toho Animation. It is animated by Polygon Pictures and co-directed by Kōbun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita. It is the second part of the Godzilla trilogy released exclusively to Netflix in the United States.
Picking up where the first film left off, the survivors of the attack on Godzilla are scattered on the Earth’s surface. Captain Haruo Sakaki (Chris Niosi) and the last remnants of his team are taken hostage by a race of surviving humans called Houtua who have evolved during Godzilla’s twenty-thousand year reign. They make a deal with the Houtua, who say Godzilla has slain their god, who left behind an egg.
Haruo disobeys orders from the Central Committee still orbiting in a space station above. He decides to stay and lead a mission to try to kill Godzilla and the Houtua lead them to Mechagodzilla’s old factory. There they find that the nano-tech used to create the weapon has evolved with the planet, creating an underground base. The Houtua warn the soldiers that the factory is ‘poison.’
That does not stop Haruo and his team from building a weapon in order to fight Godzilla, but it is much harder than they first realize.
The film has the same flaws as its predecessor. The artwork is the same bizarre blend of CGI and traditional anime. Also, Godzilla does not appear, except in flashbacks, until the final act of the film. It is kind of odd to have the title character not appear until the end.
That being said, it builds well off the original film and moves the plot forward. It is an excellent take on the Godzilla franchise and I look forward to seeing the final film in the trilogy. Also, the post-credits scene hints at a more sinister monster coming toward Earth. That I am excited for.
