Jason Aaron and David Marquez continues with the current Avengers series from Marvel Comics. With issue 9, Namor the Sub-Mariner unleashes an attack on the surface world, forcing the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into action to stop him.
Just a reminder, the line-up includes Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Captain America, She-Hulk, Dr. Strange, and Ghost Rider.
After a perceived attack on “his” oceans, Namor confronts hero Stingray and the villain known as Tiger Shark. Namor gives Stingray a good beating, thus essentially blackmailing Tiger Shark into joining his army. It is not clear whether Stingray survived the attack, but it is enough to bring the Avengers to action in order to stop the sometime-hero, but often-time villain.
For a little backstory, Namor was once a villain while battling the Fantastic Four, but he later joined the Avengers after meeting Captain America. Sometime during World War 2, Cap saved Atlantis and this led Namor to make peace. Though he would join the Dark X-Men created after the Secret Invasion. He would lead Atlantis to a losing war against Wakanda and would also be on the losing side of the Avengers VS. X-Men. He needs to learn to pick better friends.
I am not a huge fan of Namor, but he is the first superhero who could fly, so there is that. That being said, his power is on full display during this story and it is a good advancement for this Marvel universe. Also, I want to mention Justin Ponsor did a fantastic job on the artwork of this story.
