Graphic Novel Review- Battlecats Volume 1: The Hunt For The Dire Beast (2018)

From Mad Cave Studios comes this Medieval fantasy Battlecats, taking place in another world where Felines rule and there are five moons in the night sky, this graphic novel collects the first five issues of the series. Do not worry, there are no spoilers here.

The Battlecats, lead by Kelthan of Stormholt, are an elite group of warriors who serve the King Eramad III of the kingdom of Valderia. After an attack from a rival king, Eramad sends the Battlecats to destroy what is known as the Dire Beast, a foul creature that haunts the borders of their kingdoms. Along the way, they encounter many dangers and evil warriors who want to destroy them and end their quest.

Writer Mark London crafts an epic fantasy with a diverse set of characters. Many comic book series run into the problem of having an ensemble cast is that they end up seeming identical as the script goes on. Now so with Battlecats. Particular the main protagonists are very well crafted and designed.

Likewise, the artwork is top notch. As with Honor And Curse, Mad Cave has an excellent group of artists drawing this series. Andy King and Michael Camelo do excellent work on the penciling and inking, while colorists Alejandro Giraldo and Julian Gonzalez bring the vivid world to life.

If you are looking for an indie comic book series to read, I definitely recommend Battlecats. Its attention to detail and fantasy-themes make it hard to put down as you read.
