My Reaction To The Best Picture Nominees

The Academy Awards released their 2019 Oscars nominations for Best Picture. Some of them seem odd, but none of them are shocking and only confirmed what moviegoers thought of the film industry to begin with. Here is the official list:

  • Black Panther
  • BlacKkKlansman
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • A Star is Born
  • Vice

Here is my honest take, with the single exceptions of Black Panther (which I did see) and Bohemian Rhapsody (which I did not), not a single one of these films interested me. BlacKkKlansman would have been interesting if Spike Lee had not spilled his political beliefs into this true story about two heroic cops who took on a group of white supremacists.

All of the others are nothing more than “artistic” movies that Hollywood makes and expects audiences to clap along like a trained seal. That is not happening. Honestly, Avengers: Infinity War, Chappaquiddick, and A Quiet Place should have been on this list, but heaven forbid a comic book epic, movie critical of a Democrat, or a science fiction film gets the recognition it deserves.

Now, Black Panther should not be on that list. It deserves Best Supporting Actor for Michael B. Jordan, yes, but Best Picture no. However, it did get nominated and out of that list above, it deserves to win. That is my opinion, feel free to disagree with it. The fact is, Black Panther had the most audience anticipation and the best showing of fans.

Now, a Marvel Studios film will not win. It just won’t. The truth is, either BlacKkKlansman or The Favourite is going to win. Those two films have the highest social justice whiner credits to make it happen with the Hollywood elites.

Looking back on 2018 objectively, A Quiet Place or Avengers: Infinity War, either one of these should be Best Picture. They were truly the best movies that had wide crossover appeal from fans, general audiences, and even the elites. Unfortunately, these excellent and great films will not get their due because Hollywood is more interested in patting themselves on the back than awarding great film-making.
