Documentary Review- Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Directed by Joe Berlinger, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes is a four-part Netflix documentary that tells the shockingly horrifying story of serial killer Ted Bundy. His reign of terror and brutal murders terrified people in at least five states, though he quipped to one law enforcement official that it was six.

The documentary series is set-up by veteran journalists Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth who interviewed Bundy while he was on death row. At first, Bundy refused to discuss the murders until Michaud set them up as a hypothetical. Bundy then began talking about the murders as if he knew the person, revealing a darkness within him.

This is probably one of the best true crime documentaries I have ever seen. With revealing recordings of Bundy himself, juxtaposed against interviews with law enforcement, victims, journalists, prosecutors, and even mental health professionals who had some sort of personal contact with Bundy, it engages and enthralls you into the horrifying story.

One thing is clear, Bundy was not only a murderer, he was clearly intelligent. He was more than a spree killer, but crazed predator who preyed on his victim before brutally killing them. This documentary does a good job of showing his terrifying personality without making you want to empathize with him (a common flaw in modern serial killer documentaries).
