“The Grim Knight” is a new one-shot from DC Comics. In a tie-in to The Batman Who Laughs miniseries, this comic book tells the story of a Bruce Wayne, who like so many others, witnessed the death of his parents. This time, however, it takes a dark turn.

In this alternate universe, Bruce picks up the gun and shoots the man who murdered his mother and father. Years later, after his first night out, a bat crashed through his window and he promptly killed it, but not before he became Batman. This leads him on a dark path of a murderous rampage through Gotham City, leading him to a climactic showdown between him and Commissioner Gordon.
Written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion the IV, the story is an interesting take on the Dark Knight. While also connecting to the Laughing Batman’s plot against Gotham City, it was really good as a standalone story. These two writers really bring together an interesting twist into the Batman mythology.
My only problem with it is the artwork. It featured two different styles of art. The flashback sequences were more pulp sequence while the concurrent story is more modern. While the artists are usually very talented, this particular one-shot felt rushed, giving the story a cartoonish feel. It is a shame Tim Sale or Jim Lee were not available for this one-shot. It would have been way better.
