Starting at issue 994 and ending at 999, Detective Comics takes Batman fans on a journey unlike any other in a story-arc written by Peter J. Tomasi and drawn by Doug Mahnke.
Batman is facing an enemy that is incredibly dangerous. Whatever or whoever it is, he seems to know who that he is Bruce Wayne and begins targeting the people he is closest to and some with whom he has fallen out. Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Robin, Etrigan, Ducard, and several others are targeted and one-by-one are taking out by this enemy. Before long, the Dark Knight begins to wonder if this enemy is closer than he first thought.
Tomasi has created an excellent story. It is the perfect lead up to issue 1,000, a milestone in the Batman comics. It is well-told and the deep dive into Batman’s past and his mythos within Gotham City and beyond is a home-run. The artwork is spot on and each cover does the issue justice. This series definitely got me excited for the 80th anniversary of Batman from DC Comics.
