We Need To Talk About The Netflix ‘Cowboy Bebop’

Netflix is trying to break with from the accusations of ‘white-washing’ from spineless SJWs with the recent casting announcement of their upcoming adaption of the Cowboy Bebop anime.

According to Variety, Mustafa Shakir has been cast as Bebop skipper Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as femme fatale Faye Valentine, Alex Hassell as the villainous Vicious, and John Cho has been chosen to play protagonist Spike Spiegel. Fan reactions have been positive, particularly for Cho, who had a major role in the recent Star Trek Beyond.

I have to admit, this casting feels like diversity for diversity’s sake. Netflix seems to be trying too hard to push their ‘woke’ agenda on an adaption of an anime where most of the main characters are clearly meant to be Americans. It feels forced and not natural. That is not to say that the celebrities above mentioned are not talented, but when a studio forces diversity and wokeness, it tends to bring about poor story-telling.

With Cowboy Bebop, in particular, the stories avoid political correctness. The men are manly, the women are alluring, the violence is intense, and the stories do not bother on worrying about the viewer’s feelings. Hopefully, the writers and directors of the Netflix remake will honor this and then it will not matter who is in the cast, but my hopes are not too high on that point.

One final note on the ‘white-washing’ controversy, Spiegel was confirmed to be Jewish by Cowboy Bebop series creator Shinichiro Watanabe. It will be curious to see if Cho will portray the character in this manner.
