Anime Pasadena 2019

Over the weekend, I attended this year’s Anime Pasadena convention with my super cute wife. There were celebrity appearances, cosplayers, panels on various topics, and so many booths for artists, writers, and other creatives. This was my first time attending and it was so much fun.

The booths were filled with many crazy-talented artists who did drawings, paintings, crafts, writing, and designs based on such franchises as My Hero Academia, One Punch Man, Cowboy Bebop, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fairy Tail, and that is only naming a few. Adding to this outpouring of talent were the folks in cosplay. They had characters from across the range, including some comic book-related heroes and villains.

An insightful panel I attended was about how anime can help folks with mental health issues. It was a fascinating discussion from the panelists, three people with struggles and one therapist who used characters from their favorite series to talk about their problems and how they got help. It was very enduring to hear about their struggles and how they are in the process of overcoming them.

One of the most interesting panels I visited was one about the voiceover industry. Several anime voice acting insiders shared their stories about how they became involved in various English dubbing of Japanese animation. It was interesting hearing from Veronica Taylor, the voice of Pokemon’s Ash Ketchum from 1998 to 2006 about performing the character. She had some very interesting perspectives on the character.

I had the privilege to meet two of the panelist and this was the highlight. First up, was Kyle Hebert, the voice of teen/adult Gohan in Dragon Ball Z. He was jovial, pleasant, and pretty cool in person. Another panelist that I had the pleasure of meeting was Cassandra Lee Morris who voices Kirito’s sister Kirigaya Suguha aka Leafa in Sword Art Online. She was pretty cool and made us fanboys and girls feel incredibly welcomed.

Though not part of the panel, but still fun to meet was Christine Marie Cabanos, who voices Sailor Saturn in the Viz Media version of Sailor Moon Super S and Sailor Moon Crystal. She also voices Silica in Sword Art Online, one of my favorite anime. She was graceful, hospitable, and absolutely one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Anime Pasadena was a lot of fun and I enjoyed every minute of it. You could not find a crowd, besides comic book nerds, who have such a love for the medium that they were there to celebrate.
