‘Avengers: Endgame’ Review- Get Ready To Cheer

It all started with Iron Man, but it truly came to fruition with Marvel’s The Avengers. All of our favorite characters have experienced loss and triumph, good times and bad, but they were not prepared for the events in Avengers: Infinity War. In the direct sequel, Avengers: Endgame, directors Joe and Anthony Russo paint a sobering picture of life after “the dusting.” There are no spoilers in this review.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are rescued from being stranded in space by Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). When they arrive on Earth, Captain America (Chris Evans), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) try to convince Stark to help them find Thanos (Josh Brolin), but he refuses. After locating him, the Avengers confront him to retake the Infinity Stones and Gauntlet to reverse his snap. However, they find that he has destroyed the stones.

Five years later, the Avengers are trying to fight crime in this broken world, but it feels like they are only chasing shadows. That all changes when the doorbell rings at their base. The thought-dead Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has returned from the Quantum Realm and he suggests a longshot plan of collecting new Infinity Stones. They try to get Stark on board to help and, at first, he refuses, but after reflecting on his relationship with Spider-Man (Tom Holland), he decides to work together with the Avengers in a bold plan to save the lost.

This was a bold movie. After the events of the previous film, no one knew where this new entry from Marvel Studios was going. They had so many loose ends to tie and a hard road to pave ahead. Yet, they did it. They pulled off one of the greatest triumphs, not only in for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also for cinematic history. It is stunning, inspiring, amazing, spectacular, and truly great.

I have exactly one gripe with the movie, The first twenty minutes felt like its own little short film. That is not to say that it was bad, it just felt separated from the rest of the plot. While it was necessary for a set-up of the proceeding events, it still felt somewhat disconnected to the overall cohesiveness of the movie.

While the performances are all incredible (well, Larson was okay), I want to give a special shoutout to Robert Downey, Jr. He was the very first one to step into the role of an Avenger. Even in the films that were not that good, he shined. He was always the guiding light of the franchise and in this movie, he proves just how talented he truly is.

Be prepared. Avengers: Endgame is not for the faint of heart. It pulls you into every moment and you feel every hurt that the characters go through. Likewise, you feel every triumph, no matter how small it is. There were so many times in the theater when every audience member, including me, wanted to stand up and cheer. Like the first Avengers movie, it is a modern classic. Yes, it is just that good.
