James Gunn On Disney Firing: “I Don’t Blame Anyone”

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn spoke about his firing from Disney, saying, “I don’t blame anyone.” That is good seeing how he is the one who wrote jokes about exploiting children. He added later, “That first day… I’m going to say it was the most intense of my entire life” James Gunn was let go from Marvel Studios in regards to those horrendous tweets after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Speaking to Deadline, he said, “I don’t blame anyone. I feel and have felt bad for a while about some of the ways I spoke publicly; some of the jokes I made, some of the targets of my humor, just the unintentional consequences of not being more compassionate in what I’m putting out there. I know that people have been hurt by things that I’ve said, and that’s still my responsibility, that I wasn’t as compassionate as I should be in what I say. I feel bad for that and take full responsibility.”

He continued, “Disney totally had the right to fire me. This wasn’t a free speech issue. I said something they didn’t like and they completely had the right to fire me. There was never any argument of that.”

At the time, I wrote that he completely deserved to be fired and his admission vindicates that unpopular opinion. That aside, there was much discussion over who would direct the third ‘Guardians’ film. Gunn landed on his feet when he was hired by Warner Bros. to direct a sequel to Suicide Squad which later morphed into a reboot. However, Gunn and Disney have seemed to bridge the divide, with the director returning to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Four.
