James Tynion IV continues the DC Rebirth version of Detective Comics with volume four “Deus Ex Machina” which explores the new version of a Jean Paul Valley also known as Azrael, another member of the Batman Family.

Former high ranking member of the Order of Saint Dumas Nomoz arrives in Gotham City injured with a warning. The order’s perfect warrior Ascalon has arrived and is wiping out members of the order. He challenges Azrael and the two engage in brutal fights. Fortunately, Batman’s friend and ally Zatanna arrives to assist in fighting this new enemy.

Volume four is made of six issues, 957 – 962, a Tynion partners with illustrator Alvaro Martinez with a slew of other artists to put together this incredible story. It is good to see Azrael return to the DC Comics universe. He was given kind of a sad send-off in the post-Crisis canon. He has always been one of my favorite side characters in the Batman family. It was also good Zatanna and Bruce Wayne back to trusting one another. I was not pleased with their falling out prior to the New 52 and I am glad they are working together.
