Harmony Gold Makes Deal To Extend Robotech Deal With Tatsunoko

Robotech is a classic mech anime that combined three Tatsunoko Production shows The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA into the epic series merged and translated by Harmony Gold. There were several reports that Harmony Gold would lose their license to the properties, but that story has now been proven false.

At AnimeExpo 2019, Harmony Gold USA, Inc. announced that “it has reached an agreement with the Japanese anime studio, Tatsunoko Productions, Co., to extend the worldwide, co-copyright ownership and exclusive management, excluding Japan, for its landmark anime series Robotech (including Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada). This agreement was achieved after a lengthy negotiation and allows Harmony Gold to continue to exploit the animated Robotech franchise well into the future.”

This is a complete “reversal of fortune” as they accurately called it at AnimeExpo. No one in the anime industry saw this coming. Harmony Gold has had the rights to the Robotech franchise in the United States for several years, but rumors of a breakdown in the deal have persisted. Those have now been quashed with this bold new announcement.

Chairman of Harmony Gold Frank Agrama said, “Over the past 35 years we have been blessed to work with our friends at Tatsunoko on developing one the world’s greatest entertainment franchises.” He added, “With our extension we look forward to the next 35 years of working with Tatsunoko and world class business partners on Robotech.”

President & CEO of Harmony Gold Jehan Agrama agreed, “In 1985, Robotech introduced an entire generation in the west to the Japanese anime industry. Our fans are loyal and we are excited to be able to extend this franchise for their enjoyment.”

Apart from the extension, they also announced new figurines for old and news fansas well as new comic book titles from Titan Comics. But the biggest thing for me was the live-action movie announcements.

Partnering with Sony, Wonder Woman writer Jason Fusch and IT director Andrés Muschietti will be helming the movie.

This is a huge step forward for the franchise. It will breathe new life and bring it back for fans everywhere.
