Comic Book Review- Batman Universe Issue 1

Comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis kicks off Batman Universe, a new tale from DC Comics. Apparently, Bendis is not satisfied to live in Metropolis, so he is taking to the mean streets of Gotham City and beyond.

In the first issue, Batman is on the trail of the Riddler, who has stolen a mysterious jeweled egg from the Gotham Museum. The Dark Knight battles his foe, who keeps repeating a strange riddle, “When is the Riddler Not The Riddler?” The rogue escapes and Batman chases him to Europe and into a nightclub in Amerstdam where the Caped Crusader runs into a fellow Justice League member Green Arrow.

I have to admit, I did not know what to expect when I heard Bendis was taking a shot at Batman. I know he did a couple of adventures for DC Comics Batman Giant, but since they were not available at my local comic book store, I never got around to reading it.

Partnering with superb artist Nick Derington, Bendis gives an interesting take on the Batman. He is a lot less menacing than we have seen from in modern writers and focuses on his skills as a detective. That was refreshing. I did enjoy this issue and found it interesting. However, Bendis has a bad habit of having a great start only to become mediocre as time goes on. That being said, Batman Universe was an interesting tale and if it keeps up the momentum, it will be a good take.
