‘Secret Obsession’ Review- Too Fast To Be A Thriller

Secret Obsession is a Netflix exclusive psychological thriller directed by Peter Sullivan. It was released the day after star Mike Vogel’s fortieth birthday and that is the most interesting thing about the movie.

Jennifer (Brenda Song) is on the run from an unseen force on a rainy night but is hit by a car. After being rushed to the hospital, her husband Russell (Mike Vogel) arrives to find that she has lost most of her memory, including of their recent wedding. He brings Jennifer to their home, strangely isolated from the nearby city. As weird coincidences and shards of memories emerge, Jennifer starts to question her husband’s motives. Meanwhile, Detective Frank Page (Dennis Haysbert) is assigned to the case but soon discovers that Russell seems to be avoiding him to discuss his wife’s case making him suspicious of Russell.

On its face, the movie has all of the qualities of a basic thriller. While it appears nothing new or groundbreaking, it clearly has the potential to be a decent thriller that at least had some tense moments or jump-scares. However, if that is the goal, it was not reached.

Most thrillers are a slow burn, building up the tension until moments where you burst. Secret Obsession is way too fast-paced for that to happen. It does not build up any tension and just hits all of the major high points in Sonic The Hedgehog speed and does not allow the viewer to get caught up in the suspense of the situation.

As for the performances, they felt phoned in. I do not blame Vogel, Song, or Haysbert for this. When you are acting at breakneck speed for a movie that should have a slower pace, I can tell why they were working with what they had.

One final note, the trailer gave way too much away. Instead of showing us a potential thriller, we learn too much so a lot of what was supposed to be a surprise from the teaser.

Bottom line, while it had an interesting concept, Secret Obsession moved way too fast for a thriller, feeling like the movie was more bullet points than plot. It really hurt what could have been an interesting take on the genre.

PARENTAL CONCERNS: Disturbing images, Violence, Some sexual content
