‘Ghostbusters’ Sequel Books Dan Aykroyd, Murray Still In The Air

Actor Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that he is returning for the upcoming ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel. The actor appeared in the first two originals films alongside Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. The four actors made up the original team in the first two films, both directed by Ivan Reitman.

“Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a new movie, called — well, it’s gonna be Ghostbusters, the third movie,” Aykroyd told Joe Rogan, according to Digital Spy. “It’ll be all or most of the original people. And then young stars […] It’s gonna be great.” He added, “I’m so excited about it, and it’s just wonderful to be able to [go] back and revisit that. I don’t do the pictures anymore much, and I’m in that one.”

The new film, tentatively titled ‘Ghostbusters 2020,’ will ignore the poorly received 2016 reboot starring Melissa McCarthy and will be a sequel to the first two films, directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the original director.

So far, Aykroyd is the only of the original cast to be confirmed. Rumors of Hudson and Sigourney Weaver‘s casting has been circling, but no one has confirmed anything. Ramis, of course, passed away in 2014. Though, Aykroyd did express hope that Bill Murray will join the cast, which includes Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon.

According to Fox News, Ivan Reitman expressed excitement for the new movie, explaining it will focus on a family from the first film.

“I think it’s a wonderful story because people seem to continue to be interested in 35 years after we came out with the first one. And I think we’re trying to expand it a little bit. And I think Jason’s movie does that,” he said. “This is a story about a family.”

He also described why he thought the 2016 movie, now rebranded as Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, did not go well.

“Although the girls’ movie kept the concept and the ideas alive, and it was really good, they were great in it, it wasn’t like giving it to the new generation, the actual descendants of the original Ghostbusters. So we’re going to link to the DNA old and new there,” Reitman explained.

While Murray has not been confirmed for this upcoming film, he did have a cameo in the reboot along with most of the original cast.
