‘FBI Lovebirds’ Review- An Awkward Good Time

Husband and wife tag-team Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer, who masterminded such documentaries as FrackNation, Not Evil Just Wrong, and Mine Your Own Business, plus the feature film Gosnell, brings to us “FBI Lovebirds | How Two FBI Operatives Tried To Take Down Donald Trump.” It is a dramatic reading of the texts between disgraced FBI agents Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, who were on the infamous Mueller Team, investigating the Trump-Russian collusion conspiracy theory.

Counterintelligence Division FBI Agent Strzok (Dean Cain), who was married at the time, begins texting his mistress Page (Kristy Swanson), a trial attorney for Robert Mueller, sometime in August 2015 about the 2016 campaign and their relationship. As they discuss the election, their texts go back and forth between a lack of professionalism about the election to sounding like two high school students being flirty out of sight of their home-run teacher. The play then jumps forward to the Congressional hearing where they are questioned by a GOP (Bruce Nozick) and Democrat (Christopher T. Wood) lawmaker.

Actor Dean Cain said of the play, “This is me playing Peter Strzok as written by Peter Strzok. So often, truth is stranger than fiction, and this ‘truth’ is Peter, in his own words.”

There is nothing closer to the truth. The play truly captures the lack of professionalism and presumption of innocence that Robert Mueller’s team had as the investigation droned on. As Strzok and Page banter back and forth, you wonder if these were teenagers running for student council instead of professional investigators. Likewise, the questions and answers from the Congressmen were stunning to listen to as Strzok and Page tried to play off their obvious lack of objectivity during the investigation.

I would like to praise Dean Cain and Kristy Swanson. Both of them read the texts with ease and hilarity that made you somewhat awkward as you listened to these conversations. Everything from their mannerisms, expressions, and inflections made you laugh at the whole insane situation. Both of them hit their mark as they perform the roles of Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. Cain perfectly captures the arrogance of Strzok, which was on full display during his real-life Congressional hearing. Likewise, Swanson performs Lisa Page as the starry-eyed Hillary Clinton supporter with incredible skill.
