Star Wars fans received a bit of news regarding a proposed trilogy that would take place in the galaxy far, far away with the news that Game of Thrones television series creators are departing the franchise for different pastures.

The Hollywood Reporter explained that the duo GoT David Benioff and D.B. Weiss released a statement saying, “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too.” They continued, “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added in a separate statement, “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

The HBO tag-team were partnering with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to write and produce a new trilogy that would be separate from the main nine films. However, the poor reception of Johnson’s so-called entry, this through his future with the Star Wars universe into doubt. As for Benioff and Weiss, they signed a deal with Netflix. Crossover fans of GoT and Star Wars breathed a collective sigh of relief. While I personally did not watch the HBO fantasy series, I have heard from fans that the ending was disastrous, even creating an online petition to reshoot the entire final season.

Naturally, this is further proof of the chaos Disney has created after purchasing the rights to Star Wars. Every rollout, with a few exceptions, has been met with ambivalence at best or outright scorn at the worst. Kennedy has even tapped Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, to produce a new film, but with that decision may be reversed if Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is as disastrous as it seems.

It seems that Disney does not know what to do with the franchise. While audiences have welcomed their endless live-action remakes and the MCU, it seems they do know how to handle Star Wars. Even the Galaxy’s Edge section of Disneyland has been met with hesitation from visitors to the park.

Perhaps Jon Favreau, who is overseeing the Disney Plus special The Mandalorian, can pique interest into the franchise, along with the recently announced Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Of course, The Rise Of Skywalker will be a real test Kathleen Kennedy and director J.J. Abrams can respawn the fanbase and bring it to fruition. If not, Disney needs to reevaluate the executives they have running the Star Wars Universe.
