#AmReading – Backlash By Brad Thor

Being a member of Gen Y, I was not familiar with Brad Thor’s espionage series based on his expert fictional spy Scot Harvath. After reading Backlash, I wish I had been.

Our protagonist Scot Harvath is captured, following the murder of three close friends. He is taken to Russia by one of the most ruthless generals to come from the Kremlin. His place is caught in a storm and crashes in Siberia. Alone, injured, hunted by man and beast, Harvath has to make it to safety, knowing that his friends cannot charge in to save him. As he struggles to survive in the cold Russian landscape, he plots vengeance on those that crossed him and took everything from him.

This is one of the most well-written spy novels I have read in a long time and trust me, I read a lot of them. As I stated earlier, I was familiar with Brad Thor’s work, but had not taken a deep dive into the series. Now, I am wishing I have. In that way, Backlash is perfect. If you are a fan of the series, it is an excellent continuation. If you are a fresh fan like me, it is perfect to pull you into the story.

Since it is more about survival than spycraft, it works into that narrative while mixing in details of intrigue that are enthralling as you travel with Havrath across Siberia, questioning any contact he makes while looking for an escape. You are with him every step of the way. Definitely pick up a copy as a Christmas gift and treat yourself to one.
