‘Lady And The Tramp’ 2019 Review- A Charming Tale For Dog Lovers

Disney is pouring out the live-action remakes of their films. Some people like them. Others do not. I take them on a case by case basis. For a Disney Plus exclusive, they bring us a new version of Lady And The Tramp directed by Charlie Bean.

One Christmas in New Orleans, musician Jim (Thomas Mann) gives his wife “Darling” (Kiersey Clemons) a Cocker Spaniel puppy named Lady (Tessa Thompson) who is happy at her home. Lady meets the neighbors the bloodhound Trusty (Sam Elliott) and Scottish Terrier Jock (Ashley Jensen). Soon, her humans are expecting a baby and she begins to feel left out. She runs into a stray named Tramp (Justin Theroux), who is running away from a pesky dog-catcher (Adrian Martinez). He tells her she will soon be forgotten and after being left-alone with Darling’s Aunt Sarah (Yvette Nicole Brown), she gets muzzled and runs away. She meets with Tramp and together they go on a short adventure-filled romance.

While this remake lacked some of the imagination of the original animated film, I did find it calming, charming, enjoyable, and quite entertaining. I thought it did a good job of making minor changes without taking away from the tone and aesthetics of the animated movie. Reboots are delicate balancing out and this one at least edged toward being good which was a relief to me as a fan of Disney animated features.

I will say, I did like the voice cast. Theroux and Thompson did an excellent job as Tramp and Lady respectively. Right along with the iconic voice of Elliott, there is Benedict Wong as Bull the bulldog, Clancy Brown as a cruel street mutt, Janelle Monáe as Peg the Lhasa Apso, and a whole host of others really make this film with its all-star cast. Each person did very well.

As for the music, I liked the score better than the songs where the characters are singing. That being said, Joseph Trapanese did a good job with it. Likewise, Enrique Chediak did a great job with the cinematography overlooking New Orleans.

Bottom line, while not as good as the original, it is a fun, enjoyable film that is excellent for families and for dog lovers.
