Face It, Comic Book Fans. The Oscars Snubbed You. Again.

While Joker won several technical awards and Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actors, there was a series problem with the 92nd Academy Awards. Avengers: Endgame, Alita: Battle Angel, and Shazam got a massive middle finger at the Oscars.

I liked Joker, loved it, in fact. However, it was not the only game in town this year. Not by a longshot. Avengers: Endgame should have been Best Picture (unless Richard Jewell was in there.) Now let’s be clear, Joker deserved it to compared to the others on the list.

(As an aside, I have to say, I am happy Parasite won over the Hollywood stuffed shirts.)

Shazam deserved an award for its humor, acting, clever writing, and the special effects. It did not even get a single nomination. Not one. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Why? It was a hilarious film that was loved by both the audiences and the critics. I am not saying it should have won Best Picture, but it definitely deserved a few nominations. Same with Alita: Battle Angel. It was one of the best movies of 2019 and I think it should have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at least.

Now, why did Avengers: Endgame deserve to win Best Picture? Forget the fact that it is one of the best adaptions of the Marvel Comics stories. It was number one at the box office for several days, stayed in the top ten for longer than expected, and it became the film that overtook James Cameron’s bloated mess Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time. For that achievement alone, it should have won an Oscar. As for the other reasons, let’s not forget the acting of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and the culmination of the cinematic universe that the MCU created. That was an impressive achievement on its own, but the elitists in Hollywood refuse to recognize it.

As I have said before, the truth is that comic book fans, nerds, and geeks are going to have to learn. Hollywood is never going to love you. No matter how many hypocritical directors like Martin Scorsese, Rian Johnson or Francis Ford Coppolla say they will never make a superhero film and then go on to make a bad one or eat crow and sign onto one, Hollywood will never get this. Think about the snubs of Iron Man, The Dark Knight, or even Marvel’s The Avengers received. Each one of these films deserved Best Picture, but they will always be remembered as the “ones that got away.”

We’re seeing this now with Birds of Prey. Supporters are doing their best to grandstand and virtue signal that she hates the primary audience of her film. Even as interest dwindles in the film because of this, Hollywood still refuses to back down and are attacking “men” for not finding it interesting or intriguing.

It is time for us who enjoy these kinds of movies to move on from Hollywood. It is steeped in elitism, artistic snobbery, and wokeness to the point of breaking. Hurting them at their wallets is not working. Last year, Venom outperformed A Star Is Born, but the latter got the Best Picture nod (no, Venom didn’t deserve it), just making an observation.

As I said before, here is what I am suggesting: we need to start creating our award systems. Even if it is just writing on a blog, YouTube livestream, or posting elsewhere. We list our own favorite films, why, and even get our audiences involved. It will take time, but I think if we create competition, it could change at the best, and at the very least, we will have some fun.
