‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Film Spin Dashes Into Top Video Game Adaptation

Good news for Sony and Paramount Pictures. Their adaption of the SEGA franchise Sonic The Hedgehog raced into becoming the largest box office opening weekend ever for a film based on a video game.

Box Office Mojo reports,

“With an estimated $57 million three-day performance, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog topped last May’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu to become the largest three-day opening ever for a video game adaptation. The film, based on the iconic SEGA video game, is expected to finish around $68 million for the four-day holiday frame, which would be the fourth largest Presidents’ Day opening ever, with some anticipating the film will top $70 million by the time the long, holiday weekend is over.”

GameSpot adds that Sonic The Hedgehog was the number one film for the weekend of February 14-16 earning $57 million, topping WB’s adaption of Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, which only pulled in a little over $17 million in its second weekend. On its opening weekend, Sonic was also pulling in a 95% audience rating based on over 6,000 views.

Clearly, Sonic is a winner for Sony, which has struggled to develop a film franchise of its own. At one point, they tried to renegotiate their deal with Disney over Spider-Man’s presence in the MCU. When Disney asked for a bigger cut of the pie, Sony tried to take Spidey back, only to earn the ire of angry Marvel Comics fans, causing a reversal of the decision. They have launched some spin-offs to mixed results, but Sonic is clearly speeding across the finish line, this could help them begin a possible franchise for Sony in the future.
