Sony and Columbia Pictures have been trying to get an adaption based on the Playstation video game franchise ‘Uncharted’ off the ground since 2007. After cycling through six directors, several scripts, and creative differences, it has been announced that the film will be giving a release date March 5, 2021.

Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has been attached to the project to star as a younger version of the video game’s protagonist Nathan Drake. He remains optimistic about the movie, explaining that it, while it is a prequel to the game’s narrative, it will take inspiration from ‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.’

“If I’m honest, one of my favorite video games ever is the fourth Uncharted game… Unbelievable. And lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular,” he said according to IGN. “It was interesting, when I sat down with [Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom Rothman and we were talking about video games, and I was like “Oh, I’ve just finished Uncharted.” And he was like “Well, why don’t you play Nathan Drake?” I remember being like, “I would do anything to play Nathan Drake. Please, that would be amazing.”

He added that the movie would start filming in a few weeks. “So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully,” Holland added. “The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.”

Venom director Ruben Fleischer has been in talks with Sony to direct the film and it is rumored that he is officially helming the picture.

The movie has had a troubled pre-production, cycling through directors like popcorn. Previously, Bumblebee director Travis Knight was picked. He was preceded by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), David O. Russell (Joy), Neil Burger (Divergent), Seth Gordon (Four Christmases), and the first pick Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther).
