DC Comics brings the Dark Knight into the world of horror with the three-part miniseries Batman: Gotham County Line written by Steve Niles with illustrations by Scott Hampton.
Commissioner Gordon lights up the bat-signal and when Batman arrives, he is asked to look into a bizarre case in the suburbs of Gotham County. At first hesitant to leave the urban sprawl, he decides to do it when he realizes there is a serial killer targeting innocent families. When Batman arrives in the area, he finds that it is not only a matter of murder but a dark supernatural curse that could spread into Gotham City. With the help of Boston Brand, the Deadman, he investigates sightings of zombies and ghouls.
I normally do not like horror, but Steve Niles, known for 30 Days Of Night, brings out every chilling note and scene like you would not believe. Likewise, Steve Niles does an excellent job with the artwork. He brings the characters to life and they are well-designed. I especially enjoyed the partnership between Batman and Boston Brand working together to solve some grisly murders. As an aside, this comic book miniseries is not for kids. It is creepy, dark, and does a good job of telling a story of Batman out of his element.
