‘My Valentine’ Review- Pop Stars And Abusive Managers

My Valentine‘ is a Hulu original and part of their “Into The Dark” series, created with Blumhouse. It is a horror feature written and directed by Maggie Levin with music by Keeley Bumford and Mark Hadley.

Pop singer Valentine Fawkes (Britt Baron) is forced to watch as ex-boyfriend and manager Royal (Benedict Samuel) shamelessly plasters her artistic identity onto his new girlfriend Trezzure (Anna Lore). Val fights back against until one Valentine’s Day performance in a club, Royal shows up with Trezzure and some groupies to demand that Valentine give up her music and help write another album. When Val refuses, Royal loses his temper and kills her friend and the club owner. Val finds herself locked in the club with no escape as groupies guard every exit, determined to make sure Trezzure and Royal come out on top.

As a horror film and Into The Dark feature, it has some shockingly gory scenes, but I felt it is more creepy than scary. Sure, there were some intense moments, but I never felt any sense of terror. It was more creepy and shocking but still kept me interested in the plot.

My main issue with the film is the dialogue. It is incredibly hammy and at times cheesy. It is fast-paced in portions, then slows down for no reason, and some of the lines are a bit lame. Also, the flashbacks seem spliced kind of randomly. They could be jarring, especially in scenes were Val listens to a “self-help” book. At times, it came out of nowhere and was placed it weird positions that took you out of the scene.

Outside of that, I liked the way this movie was made. It is creepy and the shots, lighting, and costumes are perfectly chosen for this type of “trapped” thriller. It also does a good job of illustrating the abuse and creative theft that happens in the music industry. From greedy managers to selfish thieves to creepy fans, I feel that every player you would expect to see was well crafted. Likewise, the music definitely has that pop star sound from the 2010s that is so memorable.

I also really liked Valentine’s character. I thought she was well-played by Britt Baron who does a good job as an artist trying to reclaim her career. She did a good job, especially with the singing.

Bottom line, My Valentine is a creepy shock feature that has a great performance by its leading lady. While the dialogue and plot has some issues, it was very entertaining with some well-crafted aesthetics.
